Lost causes are the only ones worth fighting for

That's Frank Ruddy, quoting Clarence Darrow, in Adam Wolfe's blog post about the MINURSO renewal. Wolfe also wrote an article for the World Politics Review about the UN and realism.

I think his blog post is spicier, but then, I would--he gives good shout-outs to people commenting on this blog, the Norwegians, the Australians, and the irrepressible St. Chasli III. I don't think Western Sahara's a lost cause, and since it's not, Wolfe gives a good idea of where to go from here.

Update: Arabic version of Wolfe's post, courtesy of a friendly anonymous commenter.

The late Moroccan King Hassan II declared just before the invasion of Western Sahara that it will only take few days and that he will be drinking tea in El Ayoun the Capital of Western Sahara, and that the issue will end there (the file will be closed).

Well 33 years later and the file is not closed if anything it’s still wide open and continues to be on the UN agenda of decolonisation.

King Hassan and his brutal regime thought that the Saharawi were just a bunch of nomads with no weapons, training, funds or experience and that they can not withstand the huge Moroccan army that is backed by the Gulf States’ oil money and the West’s technologically advanced military equipments.

The Moroccans were wrong. They forgot the power of believe and conviction. They ignored the love of the homeland and freedom. They didn’t study history.

Now the Sahrawis are stronger in many ways.

So the talk of a lost cause is completely wrong.

The Sahrawis were able to resist for 33 years during which they defeated Mauritania and caused significant damage to the Moroccan army which was going to be defeated if the ceasefire was not declared.

How is it possible that they will give up now?

The Saharawi nomads’ strength stems from the value they attach to dignity, honour and freedom. Neither Morocco nor anyone else can change this reality.

Anyone trying to resolve the issue of Western Sahara must grasp and respect this reality.

There is no doubt that the Sahrawis weakness is they don’t how to play the games of PR, lobbying, wining and dining. They also don’t have what “exotic” Morocco can offer to tourists and corrupt UN officials. Money is also a tool that the Sahrawis can’t afford.

But the Sahrawis have friends like Will, Alle and Chasli III and many others who can take the PR War to Washington’s legendary K street. These courageous souls are able to achieve what Moroccan millions of dollars have failed to deliver because they are defending a just and noble cause not a lost cause.

The Sahrawis cause is worth fighting for because it’s just and it will never fail or be lost. Go for it friends. We shall overcome.

  2. Good words. I expect only the best for Western Sahara with that attitude.

The last time I was fighting the PR war on K Street Robert Holley yelled at me, but you know, getting there.

"Wolfe gives a good idea of where to go from here"

Where would that be? That the pro-saharawi online community would be "large enough to shame the US and France into changing their positions on Western Sahara"?

  4. Laroussi, you firecracker. Mainly that the next step is cutting off US/France support somehow.

  9. Anonymous, the fight for Western Sahara isn't going to be over until the Sahrawi people get a referendum on independence, an independent state, or decide staying with Morocco's better. Judging by the continued demonstrations and repression of Sahrawis in Western Sahara and Morocco, the last option won't happen any time soon.

    checkmate :time's up for polisario
    there's one way , our way or the highway haha just kidding;
(to 1 anonymous)you sounds like an angry man and you shouldn't show it cause it shows your weakness ,as for the history or polisario what it gain its all clear and square on the ground we there and polisario somewhere over there ,i mean been slapped left and right in Alger's ,(marrakshy)sent once a month to check on those thousands of helpless people that are been used as slave and pawns to suck more aid from foreign donors to be resold in black market, theirs kids been sent to cuba , spain and algeria to be used and abused working in sugar plantation just to force their parent to stay put.
but polisario did gain some support from the big guns of africa like Nigeria which's in breaking point to split north vs south , south Africa with its aids ,gangs ,rape , poverty problems couldn't even solve the problem of Zimbabwe in fact cause of it Mugabe still in power , in Europe especially in Spain most the support and the demonstration which's been orchestrated by Algerian agents are from autonomous regions where they have the same goal as polisario hopping one day to gain independence from Spain, (Norwegian support) which keep yapping about everything from sand to sardine , in australia they have the pretty one (kamal fadel) having fun , basking under the sun , looking at the sea sipping w******and soda and checking his body for the right tan
,he has a website called(awsa)but i have to warn you to comment is off line
then we have (will , alle or ax)the amateurs you guys you should check moroccans blogger , they are more lively , to the point ,with facts
alle next time i'll write something about sparrows and elf owl

"then we have (will , alle or ax)the amateurs you guys"

Anonymous Moroccan: For being a bunch of "amateurs" the pro-self determination bloggers surely succeed in getting your attention...

Besides this you have all the right to criticise Polisario. You have this right all over the world, in Morocco and in the refugee camps. This is something good that we call freedom of speech.

Now unfortunately you do not have the same freedom of speech in Morocco when it comes to demanding a change of your own leaders, and in particular the Mr Mohamed who has appointed himself king of your country.

Contrary to the situation in the refugee camps, you risk jail for criticizing the Moroccan Mr Mohamed whereas no legal sentence will be passed on you for speaking out on the Saharawi Mr Mohamed...

  12. The Moroccan Anonymous writes about the refugees who fled for Moroccan military criminals:
"sent once a month to check on those thousands of helpless people that are been used as slave and pawns to suck more aid from foreign donors to be resold in black market, theirs kids been sent to cuba , spain and algeria to be used and abused working in sugar plantation just to force their parent to stay put."

Well well. So Morocco does care about these people? Just how much money does Morocco spent on their welfare?
I can tell: nothing at all, ever.

Moroccans have so little to say.. the only thing they' ve got is slander as an attempt to conceal Moroccan crimes against those people.

now look who showed up (laroussi)
    the dark horse
let see I'm not going to start comparing polisario vs morocco cause there's nothing to compare but i would like to say that we have a party called (al nahj democratic) which's deadly against monarchy and in favor of referendum in sahara , we also have a sahraouis pro-polisario with moroccan passport traveling the world to bitch about morocco and moroccans and they still come back
now polisario with a single marxist party set up by algeria with president for life who is actually a moroccan , i mean the last election , he was just him on the ballot box so why bother and what's the point of having a parliament if you don't have opposition parties is this the democracy that you keep singing about it sounds like a hypocrisy to me
as for the king , the monarchy has been in morocco for 400 years and you don't elect a king
to the refugees(in fact those helpless people are been held against there will)why the afghan refugees in pakistan , iran are allowed to roam free get job (buscar la vida)and return in there own free will , the same goes for palastenians in egypt , jordan , syria and the list goes on
so please tell me why polisario wont let those people to roam free, if sahroui in those shameful camp want to leave first he need a permission then has to wait for the all clear from alger's the same goes for a simple telephone call , Internet non existent and do you wanna know why? cause its the only card that polisario hold without it the case is closed as far as morocco concerned that's why morocco want the case to stay open is not because of polisario regime , polisario never achieved anything they are one of the most useless organisation
mr van kass no offence but you're bit narrow minded you've been reading too much of pro-polisario website or may be you misinformed
are you familiar with a words (Srebrenica massacre)that was the biggest incompetence by the dutch soldiers
mr will do you know anything about (Aztlan movement) say no more

  15. the UN is giving Morocco his historical right to recover his soveranity, and the right to exist, you should know that morocco have no reason to exist if we don't recover totally our territory, you should know if there's a war about the moroccan desert, blieve me this region of the world will see the wort war ever, you know that all the region is threated by the terrorist.
Morocco lost a big part of his territory 'Mauritania' Morocco will never let that happend again, and the prosperity of Europe depends, in Moroccan strenght to stoping terror coming from algeria, so before discussing somthing is not true at all,you should know the real algerian plans and spaniard, they are afraid that morocco recover his regional power, why polisario don't let humanitarian groups to check phisically the situation in tindouf'south algeria' because silmply they will know the truth, there's less than 60000 people living in the camps, anther thing, the moroccan sahara or the western sahara, have thier own representatives, the those real representative represent the majority of saharian people, 120000, so we have to use the logic,Algeria is afraid that this problm get solved, simplly because he next step from morocco, will be to as algeria to sign with him the northern borders, because there's no recognized border between morocco and Algeria in the north, regarding the spanish they knows that once Morocco recover his rights in the desert, he will concentrate in the ocuped cities in the north of morocco, hope now you understand, who created this fake organisation called polisario, it was considered in the 70ties as a terrorist organisation.

  19. "in Europe especially in Spain most the support and the demonstration which's been orchestrated by Algerian agents are from autonomous regions where they have the same goal as polisario hopping one day to gain independence from Spain"

In fact in Spain we lunch everyday with Algerian agents, they are part of our families...

It's also true that Spanish support to Sahrawis come from autonomous regions and autonomous cities: the 17 autonomous regions + 2 autonomous cities --Ceuta and Melilla-- that form the Kingdom of Spain. We also have a king (maybe you remember while last year he and his wife visited the two autonomous cities I've mentioned above) even though Spaniards hate monarchy. In fact one of the main differences among Moroccans and Spaniards is that you all are still ruled by a tyrant while we democratically decide king Juan Carlos’ role. Is still Mohammed Capullo who decides which parties can participate to your fake elections, and who cannot. It’s thanks to him that you still live in a totalitarian system.

It's just a question of FREEDOM, we are free and you don't, and I guess you'll never be (unless you stop drinking propaganda). Also Sahrawis are more aware of the meaning of Freedom than Moroccans: the proof is just THEY FIGHT AGAINST TYRANTS while you go to bed with them.

It's clear like water that you, anonymous Moroccan , read the Moroccan "free speech" newspapers that say nonsense like the things you wrote. If you were a freedom fighter you'd be FIRST fighting Mohammed Capullo's propaganda, then Mohammed Capullo himself.

Once you know that all the Spanish regions are Autonomous Communities from 1978, will you go on writing Sahrawis are supported "only" by Spanish autonomous regions? Or will you broke the legs to the idiot you learn this bullshit from?

Spaniards will always support their Sahrawi brothers!

  22. There would have been no Polisario or asking of independent in Western Sahara if it wasn't to Algeria. Algeria will take awhile to settle this conflict as long as it has oil to arm itself and the polisario. The one thing is sure is that the Moroccans believe in their cause just as much as the Sahrawis do. It is not up to the king or the Moroccan government to give up the Sahara. It is a national issue that unites all the moroccans including the extremists and that is what Algeria and its lobbyists has to know. Algeria has to stop promoting false hopes to the poor Sahrawis that are the most paying the price.
