Pictures from Western Sahara rally in Washington

Sahrawis and Americans rallying for self-determination

Last week, the US-Western Sahara Foundation, along with members of Christ the Rock Church in Wisconsin and Sahrawis visiting the US with the church's help hit Washington hard with their demands for self-determination.

On Thursday, they rallied in Lafayette Park. Several cool people, including Frank Ruddy and Suzanne Scholte, spoke.

That night, there was a congressional reception that was sponsored by reliable House allies Zach Wamp, Joseph Pitts, and Donald Payne. They were joined by Tim Ryan (D-OH), who seems like a snazzy up-and-comer. On the Senate side, there was Russ Feingold (my hero!), James Inhofe, and Jim DeMint. It's nice to see someone on the Hill is standing up for Sahrawis.

Here are some pictures from the rally courtesy of Mohammed of Western Sahara Echo. If you know of any more, tell me!
A woman I don't know gives a speech. Below her, Frank Ruddy waves a Polisario flag.

The rally was postponed until gravity returned to normal.

I'm jealous of those brown shirts. On the front they say, "Be their voice."

I'm glad Christ the Rock, US-WS Foundation, and everyone else involved pulled it together. Mrs. Lenz at the church said they were feeling optimistic after the great embassy protest of 2006, so I can only imagine how well this is playing in Tindouf. And how sourly it's being received in Rabat.

Only International Force Willing to protect basic human rights standards, Says Ban-jusa

I'm frustrated in my attempts to assemble an international peacekeeping force with the highest standards of behavior and capable of protecting innocent civilians, and to serve as a buffer between Polisaurus and Moroccus. Frankly, MINURSO sucks !!!

The good news is that - today - I have received a firm commitment from the Boys & Girls Scouts Organization announcing their willingness to serve as peacekeepers in the conflict-ridden region.

Many diplomatic observers were surprised that I would entrust the delicate task of peacekeeping to the Boys & Girls Scouts, an organization that has shown leadership in the ethical, good order and discipline fields but is relatively untested in the treacherous sands of Western Sahara conflict.

But with such foreign powers as the memebrs of the Security Council unwilling to strengthen the upholding of human rights standards in that hotspot of the world, The Boys & Girls Scouts became the only option for me.

"We believe that the Boy Scouts will bring peace, zero-tolerance policy , and failing that, at least say it as it is; The occupier is torturing and maiming routinely innocent civilians in Western Sahara. Something MINURSO has failed to discover." Sue Revelator, Officer-in-Charge of the Department of Field Support, said at a press briefing this morning.

I do not want the case of "Ivory Coast" to happen again. Last week, the Morrucan contingent serving with the UN Operation in Ivory Coast (UNOCI) was suspended amid allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse involving the local population. But I'm not kidding you, those are not allegations, those are facts and everyone knows it. Now, let's drag the investigation until the world turns its attention away from this debacle.

Before I even got this job, MINURSO was already turning a blind eye on the human rights situation in Western Sahara. To me, that's no longer acceptable. How am I supposed to advance my autonomy project, having a bunch of money-sucking, girls' stalking idiots who don't give a damn about the safety of the civilian population?

According to the plan that I hammered out with the Security Council, The Boys & Girls Scouts will create a 5 kms. buffer zone along the Morrucan defensive berm. And, by the way, this is not the imaginary buffer zone Benaissa keeps talking about and stretching at will!

Below you can read some reactions to my announcement:

Abdelaziz Mohamed, who has studied the interaction between North Africa politics and global Boy Scouts organizations at the University of Tan-tan, believes that unlike MINURSO, the Boy Scouts organization can be expected to stay independent of foreign states, such as Egypt and France.

In other news, despite the earlier declarations of some of its representatives, Polisaurus has finally hit on target. Ali Beila, the chief negociator, made a startling comment to the press: "If the Morruccans insist on discussing autonomy at the negociating table, we will just pretend we're not there."

When I read the SPS wire about the rallye in front of the white house, It seemed to me that thousands of people were in the demonstration. Now that I saw the pictures, it looks that a couple of parents, their children, and a guitarist attended the event.
No wonder why SPS didn't post the pictures. When Polisario will learn that propaganda is no longer a good means of struggle, maybe things will be better.

Explanation to Justin: The Polisario propaganda machine Nr 1, S.P.S, has an editorial line that favors publishing false news, distorted news and altered news. Depending on the case of course.

By respect to fairness, Morocco MAP DOES propaganda for the Moroccan regime, but they are not in the false news business.

Morocco MAP DOES propaganda for the Moroccan regime, but they are not in the false news business.

I am sorry but I do not follow this argumentation. Polisario propaganda is "false news, distorted news and altered news", the anonymous commentator writes, whereas Moroccan propaganda is... what? True news?

Justine: I will give a very recent example as I don't have time to search through all SPS archives. So here it is: S.P.S. kept screaming for days that RASD and Chad have raised their relations to Ambasadorial level (http://www.spsrasd.info/en/infos/2007/07/sps-e170707-2.htm) the thing is, this is a total lie. I don't know how they can lie about a whole country, maybe because it's a weak one, anyway, the Prime minister of chad issued on July, 20th, a formal statement denying such claims. The statement is available on the chad governement website in French (http://www.primature-tchad.org/?2007/07/20/561-mise-au-point). You can copy and paste in a translation website to read.
The worse is that S.P.S didn't even bother deleting their false newswire from their website....can somebody let them know ! I mean they can lie for few hours but not for weeks !
Anyway, I have seen plenty of such examples on SPS.
Regarding MAP, I didn't say they are fair.

No Act of re-establishment of the diplomatic relations between Chad and the RASD was signed during the audience that the Prime Minister granted to the Minister sahraoui Foreign Affairs Mohamed Salem Ould Salek. We make the following development. The Prime Minister, Chef of the Government Dr. Nouradine Delwa Kassiré Coumakoye received in audience on last 10 July, Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, Foreign Minister of the Arab Republic Sahraouie Démocratique (RASD). During the audience, the emissary sahraoui indicated that his mission in Chad aims on the one hand, to transmit a message of condolences of the President Sahraoui Mr. Mohamed ABDELHAZIZ to his Chadian counterpart Idriss Déby Itno for the death of his elder son; in addition, to inform the Chadian authorities of the second round of the negotiations on the self-determination of the Sahraoui people which will begin again soon under the auspices of the United Nations. To leaving the audience, Mohamed Salem Ould Salek lent itself to the questions of the Chadian press. It does not have to in no case made mention of the signature of an unspecified agreement. The official statement whose Alwihda quotes is signed by the Principal private secretary of the Prime Minister. It stipulates: "Indeed, the two parts decided to raise their diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level as soon as possible, and this in accordance with the principles and objectives of the Charter of the United Nations and the deed of partnership of the African Union." In his attempt at misinformation, the writer of the article is even unaware of, diplomatic logic, when it is unable to read between the lines. Its ignorance resulted even in being unaware of the protocolar rules when it is allowed to say that I had there, a signature of an agreement between "Chadian the Prime Minister and a Sahraoui Foreign Minister." No educated man can accept of such tall story, such an insanity except a victim of the intellectual phantasm. The article of Alwihda is pure and simple deformation of information by Net surfers who use the magic of the fabric to distract, harm and appease their unavowed interests. We ask consequently the national and international opinion not to let ourselves misuse by this kind of contemptible and foolish handling. Why do you trust the French report and not the SPS one? I don't know anything about this site, by the way, but it is owned by a German: http://www.whois.ws/whois-org/ip-address/primature-tchad.org/

I am sorry, but I do not really understand what all the fuss is about regarding SPS, Chad and the RASD.

What the Chadians are upset about, if I get it right, is that the newspaper Alwihda has published a story saying that a deal was signed at the meeting between the SADR Minister for Foreign Affairs and Chad's Prime Minister.

"Aucun Acte de rétablissement des relations diplomatiques entre le Tchad et la RASD n’a été signé au cours de l’audience", writes the Prime's cabinet in their sharp communique.

In English that means that no form of agreement of reestablishing the diplomatic ties between Chad and RASD was signed at the meeting.

Fair enough. No deal was signed.

In the press release however from the Chadian Prime Minster's office, after the meeting with the Saharawi Minister for Foreign Affairs, it says:

"A cet effet, les deux parties ont décidé d’élever leurs relations diplomatiques au niveau des Ambassadeurs dans les meilleurs délais".

This means that the two parties agreed to raising their diplomatic relations to ambassador levels, as soon as possible.

Now they haven't done this yet, but they will as soon as it's possible. And that is also what SPS writes:

"The Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic and the Republic of Chad decided on Tuesday in N’Djamena to raise their diplomatic relations to ambassadorial level as soon as possible".

What SPS published is merely a re-write of the press release from the Prime's cabinet. So, what is the lie from SPS here? Someone please enlighten me?

    -------- After word ------
Why Chad's government has it's website at a German host, I do not know. Maybe they like to try something new after so many years of French supremacy. Considering Chad's hi-tech situation (almost non-existing) a German web hotel might be as good as any.

No matter how hard SPS tries, it can't beat this:
    1. Morocco Strikes Black Gold!King Mohammed VI confirmed in a speech to the nation on Sunday August 20th (2000), adding that the find "was good-quality and abundant." Later on, the Moroccan News Agency MAP confirmed that "A large field had been discovered near Morocco's eastern border, near Talsint.

    2. It's worth to remind us that, in an interview with the French daily 'Le Figaro', the King extolled himself by saying: "I have tackled the issue of [Western] Sahara which poisoned us for twenty five years". [...] "We worked hard, during eighteen months and in the strictest confidentiality, in order to have eleven members of UN Security Council recognize the legitimacy of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara." (extracts from MAP).

Well, we now know the validity or lack thereof both assertions.
Can any one among the 'anonys' deny the King's statements above?

    Larbi and Laroussi,
The point here is whether or not SPS anounce false and distorted information. The Chad example was given to show how SPS publishes an information saying that RASD and Chad have agreed to raise their relations to Ambassadorial level, which is totally false according to the Chad prime minister statement. By the way the statement clearly denies such facts.

The prime minister statement included at the end the false report.

    Bottom line : S.P.S, stop lying !

Will, good point by calling the Embassy of Chad to check the integrity of the prime minister website.

I am sorry, but I do not understand how you can make these conclusions.

Where does the statement from Mr Djimet Vanzou say that Chad and RASD have NOT agreed to raise their relations to ambassadorial level?

The prime minister statement included at the end the false report.

Where does he say that the press release "COMMUNIQUE N° 473/PM/CAB/07" is false?

Maybe I have missed out on something here, but I do not understand your reading of the text.

What I see is that the Prime Minister's cabinet is upset over the claim by the newspaper Alwihda that an agreement été signé (was signed) at the meeting between the Chadian Prime Minister and the RASD Minister for Foreign Affairs.

No treaty has been signed Mr Vanzou stresses in the declaration. There is a difference between signing a treaty and making an verbal agreement.

To prove that, the press release from the meeting between Chad's Prime Minister and RASD's Foreign Minister is added to the declaration.

"Pour preuve, ci-joint ce communiqué que vous pouvez lire à votre loisir."

If this press release is false, why doesn't it say so anywhere in the statement from the Prime Minister's cabinet? There is no mentioning anywhere of a false press release.

Please feel free "anonymous" to explain your interpretation of the declaration from the Chadian Prime Minister's cabinet.

Maybe you see something that I have missed, but so far I can not blame SPS for publishing what seems to be a correct press release from the meeting between Chad's Prime Minister and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the RASD.
